Animosity between Belfast’s private hire firms and black taxis intensifies

A war of words has erupted between Belfast’s taxi drivers. The conflict between public hire taxis (black cabs) and private hire taxis (such as Value Cabs) has been simmering for years, but is set to heighten as a series of new black taxi ranks are about to be announced in the new year.

One senior representative of the private hire industry said the behaviour of black cab drivers is creating a bad impression for visitors to Belfast.

“They park on the bus lanes outside the station, get out of the vehicle and stand at the doors shouting ‘Taxi’,” he said...........

Four drivers prosecuted in Hyndburn taxi crackdown

AN undercover crackdown on private hire taxis in Hyndburn has led to four drivers being accused of operating illegally.

Plain clothed police, licensing officers from Hyndburn Council and Lancashire County Council’s Safer Travel Unit, targeted drivers who flout the law by picking up passengers at the side of the road.

Four drivers have been ordered to appear at court accused of driving without insurance after illegally plying for hire. The offence carries a maximum penalty of £2,500 fine.........

A WOMAN passenger was allegedly raped by a taxi driver late at night while being taken to see a relative.
A court heard that Huseyin Aydin asked her if she could pay for the fare in advance and then told her something like: “You can pay for it in another way”.
A jury at Preston Crown Court heard allegations that he locked the doors centrally and drove to a secluded spot on the journey from Lancaster to Morecambe.
There it is claimed he raped her, ignoring her pleas for him to stop.......

TAXI firms in York said they could lose out on business worth thousands of pounds if the council goes ahead with a plan to introduce a card system for disabled passengers.

Those eligible for subsidised taxi fares, such as students, elderly and disabled people, currently use a system of tokens, which are issued by City of York Council.

That system looks set to be scrapped in favour of a card, which will be read by a device in the taxi. However, smaller firms say they will now lose out because the card reader….

A DRUNKEN man caused almost £2,000 worth of damage to a taxi after kicking out in a row with a woman, South Tyneside magistrates were told.
The woman and a friend were in the back seat of the taxi at about 3.45am in Anderson Street, South Shields, when the trouble erupted as Dean Salem opened the door and started arguing with them, said Glenda Beck, prosecuting.

The driver asked him to stop and go away, but Salem began kicking out at the taxi, damaging the rear arch panels. The driver called police and got out to confront Salem, who squar-ed up to him....

Council bosses have insisted the vehicles are fitted with the cameras by 2012.

A KNIFE-wielding thug attacked a taxi driver and stole £100 from his cab.

Salim Amla, aged 48, suffered cuts to his face and hand when two passengers turned on him.

Mr Alma, who is a driver for United Taxis in St Helens Road, Daubhill, picked up the two men at around 2am yesterday in Castle Street, The Haulgh.

On 8th October the High Court handed down the judgment in the case of Stockton-On-Tees Borough Council v Fidler, Hussain & Zamanian [2010] EWHC 2430 (Admin).

This is a long and involved judgment but it confirms very clearly that once a vehicle has been licensed as a hackney carriage by either a district council in England and Wales or by Transport for London (the Public Carriage Office) it is a hackney carriage for the duration of that licence, wherever it is currently located, and can therefore be used for pre-booked purposes in any district in England and Wales ................

Public horror over taxi sex attacker John Worboys has prompted more women to come forward to report rape to police, detectives in London have said.

Greater numbers are also telling police they they may have been drugged and attacked, specialist officers at Scotland Yard said.

Speaking a year after the launch of a sex crime unit to reduce rape offences in London, Commander Simon Foy welcomed more women coming forward to report offences. He said increases in offences being reported did not mean rape attacks were on the increase.

THREE young men who tried to rob a terrified taxi driver, putting him in fear of his own life, start prison sentences totalling 10 years today.

A routine tea-time pick-up turned into a nightmare for Khalil Mohammed, a cabbie with Boro Taxis for 10 years.

He was surrounded, told “Give us your money” and attacked by his violent passengers Nathan Saine, Jamie Saunders and Jamie Freer.

Prosecutor Alexander Menary told Teesside Crown Court: “He was in fear of his life.”

A COUNTRYWIDE taxi driver organisation is to challenge the legislation under which the taxi industry is regulated.

At a meeting to be held in Dublin later this week, the newly formed Tomanai Tacsaí na hÉireann, which has over 1,000 members, will tell drivers it will bring legal action against the Minister for Transport on the grounds of failures in the Taxi Regulation Act 2003.

Taxi drivers have been expressing concerns about the policing of the industry by taxi regulator Kathleen Doyle, their loss of income due to an oversupply of taxis and the introduction of new standards for vehicles.

Lockhart, O’Leary, Maher, solicitors on behalf of the new group, wrote to Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey last month outlining drivers’ concerns but…….

All 72 fixed and 89 mobile camera sites cameras will be switched off from 1 August after £600,000 was axed from the road safety budget.

The money had earmarked for the Thames Valley Road Safety Partnership, which operates the cameras.

Officials backed the cuts at a full council meeting on 27 July.

A woman who bit the hand and ear of a taxi driver who locked the doors and drove off with her trapped in the car has been cleared of assaulting him.

Mother-of-two Holly Burnett, 24, fought against taxi driver Terry Thornton after he trapped her in his car and drove away from her home at high speed, Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard yesterday.

Mrs Burnett was left “terrified” after the ordeal at Milltimber on March 19 last year but was arrested by police and kept in custody for two days. She was found not guilty of assault yesterday following a trial

TWO taxi drivers were beaten and stamped on in a brutal daylight assault at a cab rank.

Seventy-year-old Flintshire cabbie John Evans was told he would get “the worst beating of his life” after warning two verbally abusive passengers they would have to leave the car.

Fearing for his safety, he pressed an emergency………

TWO men are at the centre of a police search following an alleged robbery on a Doncaster taxi driver, which may have involved a knife.

The incident happened on Friday June 4 at around 11.40pm when the 36-year-old taxi driver picked them up in Doncaster town centre.

They asked to be taken to Stainforth. One of the men sat in the passenger seat with the other man sat behind the driver.

A Taxi driver was attacked and robbed after picking up a fare in Bridgwater, police revealed today.

The taxi driver collected two men from St Mary Street on Saturday, July 3 at about 11.15pm and drove them to Purley Drive.

Detectives say the driver was assaulted when they arrived before he was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton where he was treated for head injuries........

A taxi driver and his passenger escaped serious injury after a yob threw a paving slab through the windscreen of the vehicle as it travelled through Preston.

David Neale, who has been driving cabs in the city for the last four years, was left covered in broken glass after part of the windscreen and the passenger side window shattered inwards......
