Taxi drivers’ fury at 134% licence fee hikeTAXI drivers in Newport say council proposals to increase vehicle licence fees by up to 134 per cent could see their businesses go under.
Newport Hackney Drivers Association chairman Lionel Morris, branded the plans “ridiculous” and said drivers were already struggling to cope with falling trade and the rising price of fuel without having to incur further costs.
Newport City Council is proposing to raise the amount drivers pay to licence themselves and their cars, as well as operators fees for taxi firms.

Aberdeen: Limit on city taxis could be restored
A cap on the number of taxis in Aberdeen could be brought back in amid pleas from drivers who are struggling with soaring costs.

Councillors have asked local authority officials to investigate proposals for a survey to be carried out on Aberdeen’s taxi trade. The move followed a request from drivers and could lead to the return of a limit on the number of taxis allowed to operate in the city – five years after a similar cap was scrapped......

HUNDREDS of Huddersfield taxi drivers have voted to strike over a new penalty points system.

Kirklees Council last week agreed to the regime – which would run alongside the official penalty points system governing all motorists.

From January 1, 2012, cabbies will be penalised for offences including failing to pick up a fare; driving while using a mobile and failing to wear an official badge.

CAMPAIGNERS have hailed a minor victory in their battle to reduce the number of cabs in Sevenoaks.


The Sevenoaks Town Taxi Drivers’ Association has spent nine months lobbying Sevenoaks District Council about the apparent surplus of vehicles licensed as Hackney carriages in the town.....

The licences of six cabbies have been suspended in a clampdown on rogue taxi drivers in Bradford.Police are now urging residents to help them catch unlicensed taxi drivers following the recent operation.
